Following are excerpts from KATE BRIQUELET's article in The Brooklyn Paper on August 31-

Capt. Christine Doherty of the 72nd Precinct — which comprises Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park and a small portion of South Slope — said that the suspect is a thin man, about 30 years old, standing 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black baseball cap.

“We believe this individual maybe responsible for the other previous attacks,” said Doherty.

The brute has attacked at least four other women in South Slope, Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, usually late at night:

• The sex fiend first attacked a 24-year-old woman on March 20 at 11:30 pm on 16th Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

• On May 3 at 11:20 pm, the thug wielded a knife and forced a 32-year-old woman into a driveway on Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge, but she managed to escape.

• On May 29, he attempted to rape a 20-year-old woman near 55th Street in Sunset Park.

•On June 25, he followed a 36-year-old Sunset Park woman to her lobby at 4 am, but she scared him off.

Anyone with information regarding this man’s identity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-8477 or by visiting the Crime Stoppers website at a056-crimestoppers.nyc.gov/crimestoppers/public/index.cfm. Police say that all calls will be kept confidential.

Sunset Park Gathers to Remember 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky

Last night, Friday- July 15th Sunset Parkers gathered at the North gate of the Sunset Park Playground to reflect on the events surrounding the abduction and subsequent murder of 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky. Speakers gave voice to our collective grief and concerns, but also took time to share resources for families on how to keep their children safe. Spanish and Cantonese interpreters insured that every family present was able to participate fully. Members of the Friends of Sunset Park will continue to distribute written materials on Child Safety via this blog and in print. Materials will be translated into the various foreign languages spoken in our community.

...we beg that you take one last look at how the plan proposed by the NYC Planning Department will obscure a significant portion of the magnificent and panoramic view from Sunset Park facing WEST. Please take a few minutes to read the following words presented as testimony at last week's hearing of the Council's Zoning and Franchises Sub-Committee. We represent tens of thousands of hard working residents, business owners and visitors who over the years have given of their time and money to return Sunset Park to its rightful place as one of the best, if not the best, sited park in all of New York City. Tomorrow afternoon, we ask that you vote as if you lived in Sunset Park, ran your business from Sunset Park and/or believed that preserving the history and soul of New York is worth fighting for. We do! What we're asking are reasonable and sensible modifications to the proposed plan:

<<1>> TESTIMONY PRESENTED AT THE NY CITY COUNCIL ZONING & FRANCHISES SUBCOMMITTE HEARING – SUNSET PARK RE-ZONING TUESDAY- SEPTEMBER 22, 2009 I am Corey Kulcu-Roca, a member of the Friends of Sunset Park and I reside at 521 41st Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I stand before you to enlist your help in preserving the panoramic view from Sunset Park, a view like no other, a view that shines as one of the brightest jewels in New York City’s crown. Sunset Park, the park, as well as the magnificent view it affords every New Yorker, are part of this city’s patrimony and they must be cherished and preserved not only for ourselves, but for future generations. The Lenni-Lenape American Indians who tended oyster beds on Sunset Park’s shores and raised their families on the bluff where Sunset Park is sited, knew that preserving their environment was key to their own preservation. The many waves of hard-working immigrants who over the centuries and from every corner of the globe have settled, and continue to settle in Sunset Park have always recognized that it is theirs to enjoy, but also to preserve for future generations. Once the view is blocked by buildings as tall as those being proposed along Fifth (5th) and Fourth (4th) Avenues, we would have lost another iconic part of New York City,

Help Needed to Catch Squirrel-napper

At around 2:40 on Friday (9/25) afternoon a guy: white, 30's, 5'9-10", +/- 150 lbs., short brown hair, and wearing tight-fitting black jeans and a black tee,- was seen crossing 41st Street, headed for 40th Street carrying a freaked-out squirrel in a trap cage. The man continued on 5th at a very fast pace, crossed 36th Street and turned East along the cemetery, stopped next to a parked car, bend down towards the car and emerged, a couple of minutes later, carrying a different and empty trap cage. He retraced his steps and was last seen on 5th Avenue, between 40th and 41st Streets.

If you see anyone Squirrel-napping in Sunset Park, call 911 and try to take their picture. Unauthorized removal of an animal from a NYC park is a crime, punishable by law! Not to mention the potential public health implications to the criminal and anyone who comes into contact with him/her.

We ask that you keep us informed so that we may be of assistance and share the situation with our readership.

Come to the 1st Sunset Park neighborhood meeting of the Brooklyn Food Coalition. *** Monday September 21 6:30pm Recreation Center in the Park 7th Avenue at 43rd Street *** The Brooklyn Food Coalition is a grassroots partnership of individuals and groups who strive to give an effective voice to all those who live in or serve Brooklyn and wish to achieve a just and sustainable system for healthy, tasty, and affordable food. We derive our ideas and our strength from local participation in the food movement, from people getting together in their neighborhoods to address their communities’ needs for a new food system. We want all decisions to be transparent and for decision-making to be available to everyone. Right now we have groups in 7 neighborhoods in Brooklyn and we are working toward organizing more. You have a choice of joining the Sunset Park Garden Club, somewhere in the park every Sunday through November from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. They can use volunteers to help weed, mulch and maybe plant bulbs.

Just show up and look for them around one of the landscaped areas. On weekday mornings you can stop by the garden area behind the Comfort Station and give Lynn a hand. There's much to do...

For those who don't know- most of the trees planted in the center of Sunset Park below 6th Avenue are part of the Sunset Park 9/11 Living Memorial Grove (aka Grove of Healing at Sunset Park). Chronicle of 2 deaths- As it's been reported on 1010 WINS, BViB, the NY Daily News, Gothamist and, in greater depth by the Village Voice, two young men (22 and 28 years old) assumed to be members of the local chapter of a nationwide gang were assassinated at 8:30 pm on Monday, 31 August in plain sight of multiple witnesses by a 16-year-old, allegedly connected with an emerging and, of course, rival gang. The assassin was arrested by Wednesday, along with two others (nothing is known of the identity or involvement of the second and third men arrested).

We are encouraged by the swift actions of the 72nd Precinct and the Brooklyn South officers and detectives in locating those seemingly responsible for this assault on every Sunset Park child, woman and man. We are waiting to hear that the investigation is on-going and that the behind-the scenes orchestrators of this type of activities in "Our Park: Our Neighborhood" will be identified and put out of business, regardless of which group they represent.

We will not allow social terrorists to practice their craft on our turf and use our 16-year olds to advance their agenda!

And, what, you ask, can WE do? YOU & I, the hard-working, peace-loving and responsible majority of Sunset Parkers:

will attend as many 72nd Precinct Council Monthly meetings as possible- always held on the second (2nd) Tuesday of the month.
will attend Tonight- Tuesday, September 8th, at 7:30 PM. at Marien Heim Senior Houses- 4th Avenue (45th and 46th).
will frequent their park in greater and greater numbers at whatever hour they wish;
will expect sustained NYC Police Department patrolling of the park 24/7;
will create supportive, constructive and accessible recreational and educational activities, particularly geared to adolescents and young adults;
will report (call/email) to 311 (with copy to the Friends of Sunset Park- friendsofsunsetpark@yahoo.com , please) when garbage accumulates, vandalism occurs, graffiti appears, lampposts are broken, bathrooms are broken and/or dirty, tree limbs are cracked and about to fall on some one's head, benches are broken or paint is peeling;
will call 911 (with copy to the Friends of Sunset Park- friendsofsunsetpark@yahoo.com , please) when you witness patrons gambling, using/selling controlled substances, urinating and defecating in public;
will take our garbage with us and place it in a garbage can. If you see someone leaving an area and not taking their garbage with them, point politely (and with a smile) to the garbage and to the nearest garbage can. If you think additional garbage cans are needed, call 311 and request them- please call/email FoSP to let us know that you've contacted 311;
will attend Community Board 7 meetings related to anti-social activities in Our Park and demand action.

We invite you to join Friends of Sunset Park to preserve and improve this most important community asset and jewel in New York City's crown. Please send us your suggestions of other activities that you are interested in bringing to/participating in/seeing in Sunset Park, Our Park. Only constructive, suggestions are welcome.

Two men murdered inside Sunset Park (41st/7th) -Monday, 31 Aug, 8:30 PM

Dear Friends-

We are saddened and greatly concerned about this event, but don't want to jump to any ill-based conclusions and add to any misinformation; as we find more info, we will report back. Both the NY Daily News and 1010 WINS (via BViB) have coverage on-line, and the 72nd Precinct will only acknowledge that "there was an incident last night."

FoSP trusts that we see these murders as a wake-up call for the need for more police presence (uniformed + plain clothes) in Our Park and more appropriate support and outreach to the growing numbers of young people in our neighborhood.

If seen and analyzed through the right lens- Best Practices and a Human Approach- the murder of these two young men should elicit more attention to our park and its patrons. We can't turn back the clock, but, at least, they would not have died in vain.

RAIDS against VENDORS are NOT EFFECTIVE LONG TERM

Dear FRIENDS-

Please be assured that we, the Friends of Sunset Park, did not participate in the planning or the execution of today's (Sunday-16 Aug 2009) RAID on the park's unlicensed vendors. This tactic, while it might make some people feel powerful for a few minutes, does not work, period. In fact, it generates graffiti, other types of vandalism (against trees/plantings, equipment & facilities), as well as more garbage aka "garbage with a vengeance." Members of theFriends of Sunset Park have been approaching the vendors directly for the past couple of months to elicit their cooperation as a partner in preserving and maintaining the park. While this outreach may not carry the drama of a raid or a call to arms vs. the vendors, we believe that it will eventually yield better results. For the past several years we have been advocating for a multi-prong/multi agency approach that includes education, small business tech support, and constructive enforcement, but the response is always the same: "it's definitely the right approach, but we don't have the resources necessary." At the end of the day, all that the RAID accomplished was to terrorize the hundreds of children present, and the vendors' children, in particular, who witnessed their parents being chased like animals, as they abandoned their carts and property to avoid (perceived) arrest.

A number of the vendors spoke with us today thinking that the RAID was orchestrated by us, and since that was not the case, we are directing them to Park's management and the individuals who did so that they may discuss this issue directly with them.

Friends of Sunset Park was founded 12 years ago and has remained a constant and effective presence in our park as different park's personnel has come and gone, and as many individuals and special interest groups have also come and gone. We invite anyone who reads this posting and who is interested in responsible, effective, long-term, hands-on and realistic involvement in the preservation of Sunset Park to join us and work in a collaborative and inclusive manner. Our mission is "TO PRESERVE OUR WONDERFUL COMMUNITY BY BRINGING BEAUTY, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT TO A SAFE AND CLEAN PARK...

One-shot RAIDS against the vendors, with the goal of scaring them straight, have never and will never work long term. The "cleansing" effect may, at best, last a couple of days, but they will re-establish themselves and always in greater numbers and savvier, because of it; the graffiti and vandalism that these "enforcement actions" generate will cost all of us far more in lost well-being, frustration, park salaries, materials, and reduced enjoyment of our treasured park.
